Autism and toxicity – future generations

Sonya Doherty ND, a Naturopathic Doctor, specializing in Autism Spectrum Disorder, draws attention to startling evidence of the environment’s role in autism, contained in a ground-breaking study at the University of Texas in 2009.

Scientific evidence increasingly suggests that autism is linked to toxicity, derived from the environment.

In California alone, from 1987 to 1998 the number of autism cases in California nearly tripled.

The purpose of the study was to determine if the proximity of mercury pollution in 1998 was related to autism prevalence four years later, in 2002.  Dr. Doherty stated that:

“The findings showed that for every 1,000 pounds of industrial release, there was a corresponding 2.6% increase in autism rates and a 3.7% increase associated with power plant emissions. For every 10 miles from industrial or power plant sources, there a decrease in autism rates.”

Stephanie Cave, M.D., author of “What Your Doctor May Not Tell You about Children’s Vaccinations”, writes: “There has been an increased incidence of autism in the last 30 years — up from one out of 10,000 children to one out of 150 children and one of just 30 males in the United States”.

Dr. Cave is on the clinical faculty of Louisiana State University Medical School, and since 1996 has treated over 2,300 children with autistic spectrum disorder. Dr. Cave’s treatment protocols include dietary changes, removal of amalgam fillings, and detoxification support.

How are toxicity and heavy metals connected?
Jane El-Dahr, M.D explains, “There appears to be a correlation between immune system malfunctioning in both autism and mercury toxicity. These specific immune abnormalities have been found in 30 to 70 percent of autistic children.” (Dr. El Dahr is the Chief of Pediatric Allergy, Immunology, and Rheumatology at Tulane University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, LA.)

Robert Nash, M.D. adds that “The toxic effects of mercury are spread across a broad spectrum of diseases including autism, Alzheimer’s disease, ALS, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, neurodevelopmental diseases, nephrotoxicity, and cancer. “ (Dr. Nash is a practicing neurologist and the Chairman of the American Board of Metal Toxicology.)

“Many studies have reported that autistic children show damage in the brain region,” noted Theresa Wrangham, president of SafeMinds.

“Smaller babies, premature babies, and fetuses would thus appear to be especially at risk for mercury injuries. We are especially alarmed because seasonal influenza and swine flu vaccines contain mercury. We think pregnant women and young children should not be given mercury-containing medicines with such significant side effects.”

Elson Haas, MD offers the final comment:
“I believe that the process of detoxification is the missing link to clear acute and chronic diseases out of the body and to rejuvenate the body and prevent such chronic diseases as cancer, cardiovascular problems, arthritis, diabetes, and obesity.”
